Zeitgeschichte is the most traditional academic journal for contributions to 20th-century Austrian history. It was founded in 1973 by historian emeritus Professor Dr. Erika Weinzierl and is edited by Professor Oliver Rathkolb and Professor Dr. Rudolf G. Ardelt. The periodical has long since achieved high national and international recognition.
Its characteristics are its scholarly rigor, methodological diversity, and fundamental thematic openness that extends beyond the Austrian borders and is oriented towards international standards. Contributions to the political, economic, social, women’s and gender history, intellectual, and cultural history of the entire 20th century speak to the diversity of its content.
Zeitgeschichte aims to appeal not only to a narrow circle of academic colleagues but also to adult educators and teachers.
Zeitgeschichte is published six times a year. Each issue contains approximately three major articles as well as reviews of current specialist publications.
In the European Science Foundation (ESF) Standing Committee for the Humanities (SCH), zeitgeschichte is ranked in the highest category: “INT1 Sub-Category: international publications with high visibility and influence among researchers in the various research domains in different countries, regularly cited all over the world.” Zeitgeschichte
is also listed as a “high level journal” by SISSCO (Società Italiana per lo Studio della Storia Contemporanea) and as a “leading journal” by the National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutes.
